<p> DIED. Tom Carvel, 84, who parlayed a $15 loan from his
wife-to-be into a megabucks ice-cream company; in Pine Plains,
N.Y. Launching his venture from a roadside stand in 1934,
Carvel turned it into a 700-store chain. Along the way he
became widely known for the folksy radio and television
commercials he narrated in a voice as rough as gravel.
